Though Hank Williams III is the grandson of country royalty, he’s never felt the need to hew to these family roots, pushing off into Sleep-inspired drone and experimental country/metal hybrids (for one way-out-there album he set cattle-call auctioneers to thrashing speed metal guitars).
While the musician should certainly be commended for his independence, his best albums (Ghost to a Ghost/Guttertown, Straight to Hell) still exhibit strong ties to his dusty bloodlines. In recent years, he’s tended to split his concerts in two, focusing one half on country-leaning tunes and the other on more experimental fair. It’s certainly worth sticking around for both.
