Theatre preview: Madlab works with area high schoolers for “Young Writers Short Play Festival”

For the third year, MadLab collaborates with Columbus area high school students for a series of short plays. Madlab chose the 10 best student-written plays from submissions and the students then worked with the company’s experienced playwrights and actors to produce the play.

A range of themes and genres are presented in the shorts. There’s melancholy familial drama in “Trinkets,” which finds two siblings coming to grips with their dying mother by reflecting on the impact she had on their own lives. Comedies and satires are also on the bill, with “Fresh Fold Detergent,” about a laundry detergent commercial gone awry when the lead actress hijacks the shoot to serve her conspiracy theorist agendas.

Five plays are presented Friday and the other five on Saturday. All shows are at 8 p.m.
