LANCASTER, Ohio ó The Pickerington Central High School football star accused of raping a classmate used his phone to videotape the attack in the back seat of her car, the young woman testified in court today.
Roger L. Lewis Jr., 19, is on trial for two counts of rape in Fairfield County Common Pleas Court. He is accused of attackingthe woman, now 19, during their senior year, on Dec. 2, 2011, the day before the state championship football game, and again on Jan. 6, 2012.
The Dispatch does not identify victims of sexual assault without their consent.
Lewis was a star wide receiver on the high-school team and was recruited by Ohio State University and other schools.
Defense attorney Neil Rosenberg told the jury in his opening statement on Tuesday that the sex had been consensual.
Judge Richard E. Berens allowed Rosenberg to play for the jury a recording, made by a smartphone application, of a conversation between the woman and a friend on Dec. 15, 2011. The woman testified that she did not know she was being recorded.
She told her friend that even though Lewis was dating someone, he kept pursuing her sexually. They had hung out a couple of times, and although they had engaged in foreplay, she refused to engage in sexual intercourse with him, she told her friend.
She said she was just his "booty call" and " Iím not going to do anything."
Crying at times on the stand yesterday, the woman said Lewis sexually assaulted her once during her freshman year and again when she was a sophomore, but she told no one because she was ashamed and viewed it as her fault.
When they were seniors, he raped her on a basement couch at a friendís house on Dec. 2, 2011, she said. Still, she told no one, because she was embarrassed, she said.
One day, she said, Lewis one day swiped her copy of a book she needed for a class and an upcoming midterm. On Jan. 6, 2012, she texted him that she needed the book and he told her todrive to his house to get it.
He got into her car and made her drive to a partially completed subdivision where he forced her into the back seat, held her down and raped her, she testified. During the assault he took out his phone and recorded the attack, ordering her to yell and scream and to call him "Daddy," she said.
Afterward she was in pain and was scared, she testified yesterday, wondering what if the video wound up on YouTube and whatabout the colleges to which she was applying?
Jurors were shown the womanís ripped yoga pants and photos of bruises on her leg and shoulder taken during a hospital exam.
On Jan. 9, 2012, shewent to high-school administrators, who called police. School officials and police accompanied her home from school that day to tell her parents.
"My dad broke down crying," she testified. "Iíve never seen my dad cry before."
