Joseph and Kay Barker got married last year then instantly uprooted from Minneapolis to Columbus. The idea was to move closer to Kay’s friends and family (she’s from Cincinnati), but also to plant themselves in a central location to take their folk-pop band Bella Ruse on the road.

Rumba Cafe is the place most upstart roots-rockers perform when they blow through Columbus (like tumbleweeds, obviously). The tiny Summit Street bar breeds loyalty, so even when bands outgrow the space, they keep coming back. Fortunately, a partnership with The Bluestone means Rumba can keep reeling in acts like Justin Townes Earle and Lucero even when stuffing them inside Rumba becomes a fire hazard.

From the same suburban New Jersey scene that bred Real Estate and Titus Andronicus sprang Wisconsin-based academic Julian Lynch, either one of today’s most approachable experimentalists or among the most experimental pop acts depending on how you tilt your ear.
Celebration Rock, Vancouver duo Japandroids’ splendorous second LP, feels like all chorus all the time. It comprises eight humongous, cathartic, breathlessly aerobic tracks of perpetual youthful exuberance, the sound of the good old days transmuted into now and forever. Drums reverberate to Earth’s molten core; guitars ring out to the far reaches of the stratosphere; voices strain; forearms pump. “We yell like hell to the heavens!” is a battle cry and a modus operandi.

Sensory Overload: DOMES at its best when at its loudest

One of the reasons I prefer psych-pop over just plain psych is its emphasis on songs over textures but not at the expense of textures. With a record like Tame Impala’s two LPs or Of Montreal’s Satanic Panic in the Attic or, hell, Sgt. Pepper, you get the mind-bending sonics melded to songs that would be awesome even without the psychedelic sheen. I enjoy a good space voyage as much as anybody, but I like to have somewhere to land intermittently.
