A selection of films currently playing in theaters
New in theaters:
If “Prometheus” was the prologue, “Alien: Covenant” is director Ridley Scott actually returning to the series he birthed. It sadly didn't screen for local critics, but color me very intrigued.
Based on a popular young adult novel, it follows a teenage girl (Amandla Stenberg) with an immunodeficiency that makes life difficult, until she meets the boy next door (Nick Robinson).
“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul”
The latest comedy based on the popular kids' books takes on the family vacation with lots of scatological humor.
“Requiem for a Dream”
The Gateway Film Center's Cult 101 series marches on with Darren Aronofsky's bleak and unsettling look at four people whose addictions take dark turns.
“Hounds of Love”
This intense Australian thriller blends art-house sensibility with true horror in a tale of a couple who imprison a young woman in their house. (4 stars)
“Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2”
With introductions out of the way, director James Gunn gets down to all manner of witty popcorn thrills. This is what I wish the first one was like. (4 stars)
Also in theaters:
Guy Ritchie adds his usual stylistic charms to the story of Excalibur, but the resulting epic is pretty forgettable. (2 stars)
“Fate of the Furious”
The eighth movie in the F&F series (yes, eighth) offers more of the ridiculously over-the-top car stunts and throws plausibility to the wind. (3 stars)
