Joe Camerlengo, distilled

Certainly you recognize the face and curly mop in that photo by now. It's Joe Camerlengo, who graced the pages of this paper just last week as a member of Van Dale, a rock trio that recently released its superb sophomore record, Of the Valley II. He's also in 2017 Band to Watch Mary Lynn, Blanket Boys, Brat Curse and other local acts.

But it's a new week, and with it comes a new Camerlengo release, this time in the form of a five-track cassette tape under the moniker Classical Baby, featuring backing band the Rag, which consists of C.L. Hall on drums and vocals and Corey Montgomery on piano and vocals. (Counterfeit Madison also contributes vocals on the tape.)

Often, Camerlengo's musical persona is filtered through someone else's project, but he describes Classical Baby as “a raw example of what my brain sounds like.” “Here's a chorus to scream, if you're feelin' it,” he sings on single “This is Here,” which is quintessential Camerlengo: honest, reflective and impossible to hear without singing along. So get your chorus-screamers ready, because chances are you'll be feeling it.
