Columbus Black International Film Festival premieres

The motto of Awalkonwater Entertainment, Columbus filmmaker Mark Cummings Sr.’s production company, is, “It’s possible.”Broadly applicable to Cummings’ vision for his company and passion for filmmaking, the motto might also help tell the story of the filmmaking scene in Columbus. It’s part of the message Cummings will share in his keynote address at the inaugural Columbus Black International Film Festival (CBIFF), to be held this weekend at three screens around the city.

‘Zona Alterna’ opening reception at Two Truths

When Adam Hernandez explained the title of his duo show with Natalia Sanchez — “Zona Alterna,” Spanish for “Alternate Zones” — he described it as the meeting of two worlds. “Zona Alterna” juxtaposes Hernandez’s ‘Land of Thunderbirds’ work with Sanchez’s thoughtful and striking figurative and geometric work. A collaborative piece finds one of Sanchez’s characters opening a portal into Hernandez’s world. “This show gave me a chance to explore some ideas I’ve been wanting to work on, and to create a different sort of world than his, and then to figure out how we could unite both of those worlds,” Sanchez said.

‘Cleopatra’ closes at Short North Stage

In another typical Charles Busch treatment, the title character in “Cleopatra” is performed in drag. Nick Hardin played his first such role last summer in “Psycho Beach Party.” “You kind of do have a little bag of tricks, and I think the way that Charles Busch writes, he encourages it a little bit,” Hardin said. “As an actor, you immerse yourself in any role. And this role calls for some playing around with my voice, from dropping real low to pulling out a high-pitched scream.”
