The artist on his favorite local rapper and the best new place to get a taste of New Orleans
Hakim Callwood is a 24-year-old freelance artist from Columbus. He creates in many styles of 2-D visual art, ranging from painting to animation. He also takes on commissions and teaches classes . This year, he'll be (humbly) making his third appearance as an artist at Urban Scrawl. Here are a few things he loves.
My favorite art event of the year because of how much energy it has. Everyone's smiling and painting. It's a good chance to catch up with some local artists.
Over in Franklinton, Eric and Dowler Vacheresse run a small gallery and studio that hosts some amazing shows.
Way Down Yonder
A homestyle restaurant located at 1117 Oak St. in Olde Towne East (the former site of Hot Chicken Takeover and J Hot Fish) that specializes in New Orleans cuisine. You'll leave full and happy (with leftovers) after every meal.
This is an "E-sports training facility,” which is a fancy way of saying it's a cool place in Franklinton for hardcore video gamers to meet up. The Killer Queen five-on-five arcade game is the show stopper.
Columbus' OG VERN is my favorite rapper. Young and doing big things, he's played at all your favorite local venues, as well as opening for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. He'll be performing at Breakaway Music Fest at Mapfre Stadium on Sept. 2.
