A rundown of select films currently playing in theaters

New in theaters:

“Brawl in Cell Block 99”

Actor Vince Vaughn, most recently seen on the big screen in a string of lukewarm (at best) comedies such as “Delivery Man,” apparently delivers a transformative performance as a former-boxer turned prisoner in this gritty flick.

“Marshall”

No, not the “We are Marshall” Marshall, but rather Thurgood Marshall, longtime associate justice of the Supreme Court. This biopic focuses on his early years working as a lawyer for the NAACP. Chadwick Boseman, no stranger to playing important black Americans (James Brown, Jackie Robinson), stars.

“M.F.A.”

Francesca Eastwood follows in the vigilante footsteps of her famed father Clint, setting out to avenge assaulted women after dispatching of her own rapist.

“The Foreigner”

Jackie Chan, recently the subject of a long, wonderful profile in GQ, makes his big-screen return in this (duh) action movie where he (double duh) does his own stunt work.

“Happy Death Day”

This horror-thriller plays like “Groundhog Day” meets “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” at least if the trailer is to be believed.

“Professor Marston and the Wonder Women”

This erotic biopic traces the relationship between Wonder Woman-creator William Moulton Martson (Luke Evans), his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) and their shared mistress (Bella Heathcote).

Now playing:

“The Mountain Between Us”

Kate Winslet and Idris Elba star in this romance-disaster flick, adapted from the Charles Martin novel and directed by Hany Abu-Assad (“Paradise Now,” “Omar”). Early reviews are lukewarm, though, and you know how Stringer Bell feels about 40-degree days.

Alive Recommends:

“Battle of the Sexes”

A standout performance from Emma Stone as tennis star Billie Jean King highlights this true life battle-of-the-sexes tale, which is both entertaining and thought-provoking. (4 stars)
