Local artist combines the personal with pop culture for Skylab exhibition

This exhibition by Columbus artist Tyler Davis is new work, but is connected thematically to work he has been doing and to his forthcoming senior thesis show at CCAD in April. Davis is calling “Daddy Issues,” on view Saturday, Feb. 17, at Skylab Gallery, a “trailer” for that exhibition.

“[The] show is just a continuation of my current body of work dealing with my experience growing up without a physical father in my home,” said Davis, who filled that void in part by gravitating towards men in the media such as Tyler the Creator, skateboarder Antwuan Dixon, Dave Chappelle and Bernie Mac. The artist said, as a child, he revered these men almost as “god-like figures” due to the importance they held in his life.

Davis said the exhibition, which includes a collection of mixed-media work and a zine, is intended to address the issue through humor.
