Tacos, sweet treats and more
Cinco de Mayo falls conveniently on a Saturday this year, so you can bet celebrations will be in full swing that night. If you're planning to head out that day (or any time this weekend), schedule a visit to one of these Mexican trucks, restaurants, bakeries or ice cream shops.
The Los Guachos empire continues to grow with each passing year. What started as a taco truck on the city's West Side now includes two brick-and-mortar locations, with a third in Dublin on the way. The Mexican eatery is known, both locally and nationally, for its al pastor, a marinated and spit-roasted pork preparation that it puts to work in tacos, tortas, gringas and burritos.
1977 E. Dublin-Granville Rd., Northeast Side
Panaderia Guadalupana is one of several Mexican bakeries scattered around the city, and easily one of the most well-known. The bakery specializes in sweet and savory delights, and if you're feeling overwhelmed, just grab a tray and ask the staff for suggestions. Can't-miss items include conchas, bolillo breads and cinnamon rolls.
51 S. Hamilton Rd., Whitehall
Similar to Los Guachos, Fogoncito started first as a truck and then added a brick-and-mortar in Whitehall. The truck, which still operates a little west of Easton on Morse Road, was started by members of the Los Guachos family. The menu offers tacos, tortas, quesadillas — all the classics, really — with a wide choice of proteins such as al pastor, chorizo, chicken, lengua, suadero, tripe and more.
Panaderia Mi Pueblo
1265 Morse Rd., Northwest Side
You can find Panaderia Mi Pueblo inside Saraga International Grocery on Morse Road, near the front doors. Just look for the small collection of clear plastic cases. Pick up a tray and a pair of tongs, and then load up on giant doughnuts, conchas, slices of cake, cream puffs and much more.
Diamonds Ice Cream + Tomatillos Authentic Mexican
2285 W. Dublin-Granville Rd., Linworth
Now with three locations, Diamonds is introducing Central Ohio to Mexican treats such as paletas, small frozen confections usually crafted with real fruit. For its third location in Linworth, the ice cream and paleta shop teamed up with Tomatillos, a fast-casual spot serving a variety of tacos, burritos, fajitas and other shareable bites.
