This month, I’m doing something different — I thought I might give you a heads-up on upcoming events I think you will enjoy. I hope so.
I had a chance to sit down and talk to Paul Moore (Ravenna City Gardener and Florist) and Don Everett (Key Bank) about upcoming events of the Chestnut Grove Arts District. They are very active in promoting art in all forms in our city.
For starters, the group is promoting a Mac and Cheese Cookoff from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Hive and Delciello’s Ristorante & Lounge on North Chestnut Street in Ravenna.
At 1 p.m., there will be rides starting on Riddle Avenue through town, ending at these establishments. You will get a chance to sample and vote for your favorite mac and cheese dish. There also will be activities for the kids.
On Sept. 11, there will be an art show at the Hive and Key Bank from 5 to 9 p.m. featuring photos of past Balloon A-Fairs and 9/11 photos.
On Sept. 12, a fundraiser dinner will be hosted at City Gardener from 5 to 8 p.m. One hundred tickets will be available at no charge, but donations will be accepted and the event is open to the public.
This group is self-supporting and it is hoped you will open your hearts. Your contributions will be well spent.
Bikes that are being refurbished by the Knights of Columbus and the Boy Scouts will be given away with the best essays written. Watch for more details. Patrick Holland of Portage County Regional Planning will offer a session on bike safety. He also is working on a grant with hopes of receiving money for signage for the Bike Loop.
The goal of the Art District is to contribute to the aesthetic pleasure and economic viability of our city by enhancing areas with planters, benches, banners, public art and exhibits from local artists and students. The district is on Chestnut Street from Riddle to Highland.
The Chestnut Grove Arts District is planning many more events in the near future. Plan on attending some of these activities.
The Immaculate Conception Parish annual Card Party will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 2 at the parish hall, 251 W. Spruce Ave., Ravenna.
The cost is $7 per person pre-sale or $8 at the door. The event features refreshments, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, $500 cash raffle and a chance to win a $300 gift card to Guido’s of Ravenna.
For pre-sale tickets, call Karen Cipriano at 330-618-5540.
In addition to the Chestnut Grove Arts events, the Ravenna Balloon A-Fair set for Sept. 14 to 17 and the many cruise-ins planned throughout the rest of the summer at A&W, a new event is being planned for the downtown area.
Immaculate Conception Parish will host a music, food and cruise-in festival from 5 to 11 p.m. Aug. 18 and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 19.
The festival will take place on the school grounds at Spruce Avenue and Sycamore Street, with the area being blocked to traffic around the event. So bring your chair and pick your spot and relax both evenings.
Major headlining band Phil Dirt & the Dozers will be performing Saturday night with various other bands performing both evenings.
In addition, there will be various food vendors and a cruise-in down Meridian Street both days of the festival. Bingo will be held in the parish hall from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18 and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19. Doors will open one hour prior. Recently added is Pipilio the Clown presenting a magic show from 11 a.m. to noon Aug. 19. He will be available to do caricatures.
Ravenna Titans Baseball Academy will be hosting a corn hole tournament and knockerball events in the parish hall througout the event. Available now and then during the event will be the sale of raffle tickets to win either a two-year lease on a Chevy Colorado truck (with all fees paid) from Sarchione Chevrolet in Randolph, as well as a Disney Florida vacation package that includes a resort home in Orlando and four hopper tickets to Disney.
Each ticket is $25 and can be purchased online at www.icparishfestival.com. Tickets for the truck can be purchased at Sarchione Chevrolet. The vacation package as well as the truck lease ticekts also can be purchased at Portage Community Bank branches as well as the Ravenna Area Chamber of Commerce. Go to wwwicparishfestival.com for details on the festival and updates.
