Dear Heloise: With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’d like to serve some Pumpkin Bread, but I don’t have a good recipe. Can you help me with this? — Sophie L., Macon, Ga.

Sophie, I have a very good recipe that’s easy to make and delicious:

1 2/3 cups flour

1 1/4 cups sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chopped pecans

2 eggs, slightly beaten

1/2 cup salad oil

1 cup canned pumpkin

Sift together dry ingredients. Add nuts and mix well. Set aside. Combine remaining ingredients and add to dry ingredients. Mix just enough to blend. Pour into 9-by-5-by-3-inch pan that is greased and floured. Bake at 350 degrees for 60-75 minutes. There's nothing like a warm slice of pumpkin bread to bring back the taste and smell of an autumn day. If you like this recipe, you'll find it in my Baking Soda Hints and Recipes pamphlet, along with several other uses for baking soda that'll save you time and money. Dear Heloise: Every time I get a safety pin from the dry cleaners, I store it in a little tin that once held breath mints. You never know when you’ll need a safety pin, and it recycles both the pin and the tin. — Nell F., Ellsworth, Maine

Dear Heloise: Every time a business contact gives me a business card, I take a picture of it with my phone. I keep the actual card in a file on my desk, but it's less bulky to have all my references on my phone. — Harold G. in Dallas

Dear Heloise: I wish the people who dream up seven cup holders in a car would make something to hold a small umbrella or two! My husband and I have come up with an alternative: We use two cups, tall ones, placed in the cup holders in the console of our car. — Pauline L., via email
