The rainbow Smirnoff sign hanging from a second-story window informs High Street traffic that gays are welcome at Club Diversity, but anyone who enters can feel at home.

Literally.

Club D, as it's known, is located in a lovely house built around 1880 for a local brewmaster, back in the glory days when hops were actually malted in the Brewery District. Most of the cozy, intimate feel of the downstairs was updated but kept intact when owners moved the establishment from a spot on East Main Street in 2002.

A main bar, which holds more flavored vodka than this reporter has ever seen, feels more like a friend's large, contemporary kitchen.

The side rooms are also a mix of residential and functional. There's a small Victorian-styled living room with couches and an electronic dartboard, as well as an exposed-brick lounge with metal chairs and tables.

The backyard features a great patio complete with gazebos, the perfect place for kicking back, enjoying a summer breeze or a bit of canoodling.

Upstairs holds a full showroom known as the Club Theatre Co., and numerous local and national plays come throughout the year. Cabaret, a love story set in 1920s Berlin, runs June 25 to July 19.

The live entertainment isn't confined to the second floor, and a sleek black piano near the bar gets plenty of use. Club Diversity hosts free live music four nights a week, bringing in GLBT favorites like Bobby Hamlin, local alt-rock songwriters and a hodgepodge of other talent.

Things generally get lively, and Sunday's karaoke session has gained a reputation as a place to cut loose before the workaday doldrums start anew.

Throughout the week, Diversity stakes a claim to the best martinis in town and offers daily drink specials on top of a happy hour 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays. Diverse daily discounts include $2 wells Monday, $2.75 vodka Tuesday through Thursday, $4 domestic pitchers Saturday, and others. Regular prices aren't bad, either.

With diverse spaces and a fun GLBT vibe, the club should be the place to be during Pride Festival.
