Music: Mae

As an eager young intern at The Dispatch, I once agreed to review a concert by Something
Corporate, one of the most egregious offenders in American pop music. ("Punk Rock Princess"?) The
one silver lining of that miserable four-band slog was Mae, a cut above their emo-pop brethren.
They brandished harmonized guitars with the pop power of The Beatles' "And Your Bird Can Sing" but
the airtight proficiency of Metallica. Yet their songs stood up even without the six-string
flourishes. They've gone on to become not just a solid band but one of the most creative at
bridging the gap between artist and audience. They'll do so Sunday after Jenny Owens Young, Deas
Vail and The Ballroom perform.
