How to wear New York Fashion Week trends

New York Fashion Week might be fall's fashion forecast, but plenty of the trends seen there can be incorporated into your springtime wardrobe.

The suggestions below come from reports from Shopbop and Jin Fillinger, who owns women's boutique Jinny in the Short North and attended fashion week.

Cropped jackets, leather skirts and relaxed, boyfriend-fit jeans were some of the trends Fillinger took away from the runways.

Generally, the look was much more lived-in this year.

"It's clear that fashion is listening to our cues and delivering a more subdued and realistic sensibility without compromising style," senior Shopbop stylist Morgan Wendelborn wrote on shopbob.com. "Nothing was too glitzy, too sexy or too over-the-top, but it didn't have to be."

Cross-body bags

These haven't seen the light of day in a while. Whether they're clutch-sized or big enough to tote your life around in, cross-body bags are making a comeback. As an added bonus, they distribute weight in a way that's better for your back. Watch for detailing like fringes, too.

Peep toes

Exposed socks were all the rage on runways. You'll want styles and colors that make it clear you're showing them off on purpose - like bright solids of any length that can pair well with platforms, stick out from booties and generally punctuate a getup.

Not just a red herring

Red was all over the New York runways, Fillinger reports. It'll be great for fall (as it always is in Columbus), but incorporate a pop of this potent color now in the form of a statement piece.

Throwback shades

The oversized, bug-eye sunglasses trend is expected to continue, and you can embrace it this spring by throwing on some vintage (or vintage-inspired) shades. Look for square and oval shapes.

More skinny jeans

The skinny jean trend will similarly continue, and denim was shown in shades from dark to acid wash at fashion week. Get an updated look suitable for heels or flats by scoring a slightly roughed-up pair.
