Acme Hot Dog & Sausage Company, open since January
What: Over 30 wild hot-dog combos
Why: Six words, baby: wrapped in bacon and deep-fried
In the tiny but mighty Acme, this sign is taped onto the Plexiglas divider that looks onto the busy kitchen: "We will burn or deep-fry your dog on request." Oh, they'll do more than that. Acme will shovel on french fries, KFC-style coleslaw and meaty Coney sauce for a three-courses-on-one-bun hog-out meal (The Junkyard Dog). Or how about their plum loco Nacho Dog, with zesty brown mustard, tomatoes, onions and (this part is truly inspired) spicy jalapenos and crunchy Fritos?
Acme's goofy combo names alone are worth a visit; check out the Hong Kong Phooey (with: "Asia pepper sauce") or the already-alluded-to Swanky Franky (barber-pole-ribboned with bacon and immersed in gurgling oil), which eats as crispy and crazy good as it sounds. With its funnel cakes, homemade brownies, shakes and out-there wieners, this loony Acme place packs a whole state-fair midway's worth of chow into one small building.
