January Book Club
Orrville Public Library’s Book Club will start off 2018 by reading "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis." J.D. Vance shares the story of his family history. His grandparents were "dirt poor and in love" and made the move from Kentucky to Ohio to try to better themselves and escape the poverty around them. They were able to raise a middle-class family and eventually their grandchild, the author, would graduate from Yale Law School. But they were never able to completely escape the chaotic legacy of the Appalachian region. Read the book, now available at our Circulation Desk, and come to the January 16 meeting at 6:30 p.m. to share your thoughts.
Winter Reading Challenge
Orrville Public Library is offering a Winter Reading Challenge for patrons of all ages.
It has a checklist of fun ways for adults to read. For example, read while under a blanket, in bed, or before breakfast. Read for just 15 minutes a day, for a total of three hours, record your books and you have a chance to win a Kindle Fire. The adult challenge began Jan. 2 and continues through Feb. 28.
Young adults can choose to read any six books that have been turned into movies. Return your completed entry card to Mrs. Wright for a chance to win Redbox movie codes or a Cinemark gift card. The program began Dec.18 and runs through Feb. 17. The children’s challenge also started Dec. 18 and runs through Feb. 17. Kids in kindergarten through grade 6 can play the library’s Readopology game. Use the game board to read through the alphabet and fill out all 26 squares. Complete and return the card to us to receive an "I Read" T-shirt.
Brick Builder Club
Kids ages 8-12 are invited to come to Orrville Public Library’s Brick Builder Club. The first three-session cluster for 2018 will be at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 23 and 30. Bring your friends and challenge each other to see what you can build with the LEGOs that we provide. Register for this free program by contacting the Children’s Department at 330-683-1065. Space is limited.
No one can go wrong with recipes from Gina Homolka’s, "Skinnytaste: Fast and Slow" cookbook. Dinner in under 30 minutes? There are more than 80 recipes that accomplish that plus 60 recipes for the slow cooker. Many recipes are vegetarian, gluten-free, and freezer-friendly. Pick up your copy of the cookbook at our Circulation Desk. Prepare a recipe and bring it to share with others at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 15.
