Once again, there is a Barnesville connection to the Winter Olympics. When U.S. athletes marched behind the stars and stripes last week, Dr. Nicole Detling’s was rooting for all the team members including the 44 who are clients of her firm, HeadStrong Consulting, LLC based in South Jordan, Utah. "We are so proud to be part of their journey," Detling said just before the start of the games.
Detling is a 1993 graduate of Barnesville High School. Her path to the Olympics began with undergraduate degrees in psychology and sports science at Ohio Wesleyan University followed by a Masters’ Degree in sports psychology at Ithaca College.
By 2000, she was enrolled in the doctorate program at the University of Utah, the perfect place to take in the 2002 Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City. Although she did not work directly with Olympians that year, shortly afterward she was hired by U.S. Speedskating.
Detling was a fully-credentialed member of Team USA with the US Short Track team in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games when all 10 skaters on the team came home with at least one Olympic Medal. She worked with US Speedskating from 2008 through 2013.
In 2014, she was part of the American team in the Sochi, Russia, 2014 Winter Olympic Games, working as a fully-credentialed sport psychology consultant with the US Freestyle Aerials Ski Team.
Dr. Detling is currently one of the sport psychology consultants/mental skills coaches with the US Ski and Snowboard Association.
For this year’s games at Pyeongchang, South Korea, Detling will coach her Olympians stateside. "The Olympics athletes I work with are used to using Skype and FaceTime with me throughout the years as they are all over the world at any given time."
During a recent email interview, Dr. Detling provided a list of Athletes and Teams she personally works with and will be supporting from her base in Utah. They include:
• US Freestyle Aerials Team (Mac Bohonnon and all others)
• US Ski Jumping Team (Michael Glasder and all others)
• US Slopestyle Snowboard Team (all athletes)
• US Nordic Combined Team (all athletes)
• And a few random athletes for US Snowboard Halfpipe, US Freeski Halfpipe, US Freeski Slopestyle, US Figure Skating, and US Short Track Speedskating
One of HeadStrong’s consultants, Nick Galli, who does sport psychology / mental performance coaching with US Speedskating, will be with the team at the Games in Korea with the team, Detling says.
Throughout the competition, Detling’s firm will post updates at the HeadStrong Twitter Account
HeadStrongConsulting (@HeadStrongTeam) while she will post medal totals for the 44 athletes at #HeadStrongMedalCount . Posts on Instagram are found at https://www.instagram.com/headstrongdoc/
In addition to her firm, HeadStrong Consulting, LLC, a sports psychology company focusing on performance enhancement through mental skills training, Detling is contracted with the University of Utah Athletics Department to provide sport psychology services for university athletes.
With the daunting schedule that the coaching and consulting presents, Detling has also managed to find time to write a book. Pre-order copies of "Don’t Leave Your Mind Behind" that she co-authored with Dr. Keith Henschen, may be placed on her firm’s website www.HeadStrongConsulting.com for $14.99, pre-orders shipped free. The authors will sign pre-order copies before they are mailed.
Detling reports, "I have already had quite a few people from Barnesville purchase the book". The Enterprise will profile the book in more detail once the games are over.
The Barnesville native, daughter of Rev. Tom and Bonnie Detling, was the featured speaker along with Olympic speed skater, Jessica Smith, at the 2014 Barnesville Chamber of Commerce Banquet after returning from the Winter games at Sochi, Russia.
"I am so lucky to have such amazing support from my hometown. I couldn't have grown up in a better place."
