As indicated in today's paper, the Sweatin' Pride Kickoff party tonight at Axis, 775 N. High St., will be off the chain, thanks in so small measure to Le Tigre/MEN/Peaches member J.D. Samson on the decks. Grooving get started around 11 p.m.
Also, the Summit/Bobo complex has a couple potentially incredible rock shows lined up tonight thanks to bands from either end of the Bay Area. San Fran's Sleepy Sun headlines The Summit, 2210 Summit St. The psych-rockers have a meek disposition but are powerful enough to crush you if you rub them the wrong way. Vug and the Stallions were slated to open this show at one point, but it's not on their calendar and I don't know who's supporting now. Whoever is opening ought to get kicking around 9 p.m.
Next door at Cafe Bourbon Street, 2216 Summit St., Nobunny tops the bill with local punk powers Day Creeper and Savage Pinkos (check today's column for more on them). The Oakland combo is straightfoward and Ramones-y in their approach to punk, not flying off the rails but rather making magic through applying quirky melodies to modest chord progressions. The Nerves and The Only Ones come to mind too; or think of them as a weirder, more subdued version of the dearly departed Exploding Hearts. 10 p.m. start. $5.
