Tonight's Makebelieves gig at Carabar, 115 Parsons Ave., is being billed as the band's last in Columbus. The garage guzzlers hail from Athens, but frontman John Clift, a.k.a. Dirty Johnny, has become at least semi-local in recent months by tending bar at Bodega, so consider them a Columbus treasure as well.
I wrote last week that the Oblivians kick out a most violent case of the blues, and the description fits Clift and company just as well, although this crew's raunchy riffs are slightly bent, just like Johnny's hunched stage persona thanks to a leg ailment. The slight hobbling doesn't keep him from being one of the most compelling frontmen in Ohio rock, as surly and salacious as James Brown with a fraction of the mobility. This band will be missed.
Also at Carabar tonight: EYE and Colossus.
