Weird, right? Maybe not as weird as it sounds. The press release stated:
"What motorists and participants are to expect is a safe, short ride of at least 300 or more cyclists that will avoid residential areas as much as possible. Several informal bike rides such as the Monday Night Ride and the Alley Cat Races are of similar size and have occurred in Columbus without significant interruption of traffic.
"The World Naked Bike Ride has been intentionally scheduled late on a Saturday night to avoid contact with children and to coincide with rides in other cities around the world. Most participants will be painted or otherwise costumed, similar in many respects to the various stages of friendly undress found at ComFest and Gay Pride.
No doubt there will be a significant number of cyclists wearing only shoes. This is not a drunken or overtly sexual ride and this is explicitly addressed in all of our promotion of the event. We want all participants and other motorists to feel safe...that's the point!"
