Artist: Anthony Hamilton Track: "They Don't Know" Album: Southern Comfort Listen
About the music
I'm a sucker for anything reminiscent of the classic soul records from Sly Stone, Parliament and James Brown, but I'm not a sucker. For more than a decade since Hamilton's debut, the Southern soul singer has effectively channeled the greats by: choosing amazing producers; refusing to appease mainstream R&B fans with the addition of hip-hop; and singing with a texture few of his contemporaries can match.
Continuing his legacy is this track, the first from his new album. It expertly combines the call-and-response structure of gospel with a beat as smooth as silk.
Why to know it
I'm not sure why his website hasn't posted any new material - the album was released April 3 - but I suspect it might have to do with label finagling. He is releasing this record on Merovingian, and his site is managed by the Zomba Label Group, which released his previous record. They are affiliated with Sony-BMG.
You'll hear this song soon enough. I and many others will be talking about this record the rest of the year. So, you know, you're welcome for the introduction.
