Artist: The Midway State Track: "Nobody Understands" Album: Met a Man on Top of the Hill
Soon, this Canadian outfit will receive mixed reviews strictly on how much the reviewer in question feels the group's new EP from Interscope Records borrows from the languid, lovey work of Coldplay.
It certainly does, but me, I like Coldplay. But that band is submerging itself deeper and deeper into atmospheric production - losing much of its stark plaintiveness in the process - and is substituting bells and whistles for the core qualities heard on A Rush of Blood to the Head.
The Midway State remedies those questionable developments with less emphasis on layers and a focus on breaking hearts with a bare-bones, vocal-forward mix. They make many other good decisions: a small, delicate fluttering of synth; delayed percussion; and including many open spaces.
