Artist: Yuck Falls Track: "Down and Out"
Apparently a jug band staffed by musicians who equally love country and punk rock, this collective featuring Sarah Asher, among many other talents, treated the Comfest crowd to an intimate atmosphere even more backwoods and rootsy than the hippie vibe normally associated with the fesitval.
Saturday at the Solar Stage, the band engaged in numerous campfire jams (the good kind) and foot-stomping ditties to which one could easily do-si-do with a woman wearing soiled overalls. Atop the country kitsch was an obvious love of rock stylings and a rhythmic tightness that comes with people who can pull off the classic call-and-response format.
They are rare.
Most of their recorded songs, including this track, mimic the candid quality of a Lomax recording and cover the folk of yesteryear. The band talks, tunes and yucks it up before actually getting to the music, which gives a listener the sense that he's been invited into the band's own chicken coop.
