Artist: Desmond Dekker Track: "Licking Stick"
Nearly everything in the catalogue of this legendary reggae ambassador is immediately listenable - a mix of wide-eyed, juvenile humor; serious but hopeful politics; and the inescapable rhythms that dominate the many forms of the Jamaican sound.
It is dangerous, however: Dekker's work will find its way into my car stereo in June and render useless everything else in my collection until the first frost. Toots & the Maytals do the same thing, as do the Wailers. Dekker is firmly in that constellation.
I picked this track because it's the first Dekker song that I really loved. I had heard his more popular and influential song, "The Israelites," many times, and it was fantastic. But it was this track - essentially about getting rid of the hiccups - that drew me in.
