In the grand scheme of famous Elvises (Elvi?), Elvis Perkins' songwriting skews closer to Costello than Presley - but that's latter-day Costello, the genre-roaming elder statesman, not the smart-ass new-wave nerd.
Perkins' croon, though, sometimes swerves closer to the King, recalling a high-register take on Presley's balladeer years.
But there's no reason to limit Perkins' music to such narrow reference points. Though he's a mere 33 years old, his songs are like the rich ruminations of a well-traveled urbanite folkie.
Perkins and his band, Elvis Perkins in Dearland, will also have Tennessee twang-pop troupe Those Darlins on hand. -Chris DeVille
