Downtown's diplomat

Downtown retail is getting a guardian angel.

Kacey Campbell, who serves as marketing and promotions coordinator for Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District, will focus on attracting new businesses and supporting them as the neighborhood's "retail recruiter."

Campbell will provide information about the advantages of the Downtown market and connect interested parties with leasing agents, she said. She begins the post in January.

"I will be targeting specific types of businesses as they fit into the retail mix, and will focus almost exclusively on locally owned and independent business owners," Campbell said. "My approach will be to spread the word about the demand in Downtown and encourage potential retailers to consider Downtown."

The position was announced at Capital Crossroads' annual meeting in November. A similar position has seen success in places like Nashville, St. Louis and Milwaukee, said Boyce Stafford, the city's development director.

The city will, in conjunction, offer cash abatements and cash incentives as part of the

Mile on High program, Stafford added.

Buy one, get two

Chic Bags & Shells is a multitasker's heaven. All of the store's jackets, vests, purses and jewelry are two (or more) in one: think reversible jackets and handbags that have interchangeable covers.

Owner Becky Henman got the idea after seeing Miche Bags while traveling this fall. She put the concept together in time to open her shop in Worthington Square shopping center for the holidays.

Miche Bags, which come in two different sizes, make up the largest part of the inventory. Hundreds of different magnetized "shells," including customizable designs, can be attached to the base bags.
