Memo to the Crew: It's time for a change up top.

No, I'm not calling for Robert Warzycha's head. The coach has done well to lead the Crew to a 6-1-2 record and first place in the East.

Rather, this is a plea for Warzycha to make a change at striker. Emilio Renteria deserves a crack at the starting lineup.

Renteria won MLS Player of the Week honors two weeks ago for scoring in the Crew's 3-1 win at New York and following with the lone tally in a 1-0 win at Kansas City.

Both of those goals happened after Renteria entered as a second-half substitute. After getting shut out in last Saturday's 2-0 loss to Los Angeles, Columbus ought to see what the Venezuelan striker can do with a full 90 minutes.

Granted, the Crew wasn't lacking for offense last weekend. They outshot L.A. 21-3 and had 15 corner kicks to the Galaxy's zero. The trouble was nobody was able to convert all those chances into goals.

Especially egregious in his miscues was Steven Lenhart. The Crew's current leading man got into dangerous situations but squandered them all - a habit that's been forming over the course of several matches. No need to drop Lenhart for good; he's a solid player merely mired in a slump. But as long as Renteria is producing and Lenhart is not, why not slide "The Deer" in there and see how he does?

This column goes to print around the time Columbus plays at San Jose Wednesday night. Here's hoping by the time you read this, Renteria will have racked up his first start of the season.

Parking? Lots!

After more than a decade of mud puddles and red tape, the Crew has begun work on the first phase of a $5 million construction project to improve the parking situation outside Crew Stadium. Grading, drainage and paving work is expected to be completed in a lot directly south of Crew Stadium before the Ohio State Fair begins July 28.

A second phase will pave additional lots north, west and east of the stadium between the end of the fair on Aug. 8 and the Oct. 2 launch of the All-American Quarter Horse Congress.
