Guitarist Kid Congo Powers (born Brian Tristan) has a resume that sounds as though it were dreamed up by a musically astute goth-punk, having logged time with the Gun Club, the Cramps and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

Haunted Head, his latest album with his backing band the Pink Monkey Birds, walks a similarly sinister, sexy line, Powers unleashing largely spoken word soliloquys atop a shuffling backdrop of dark, buzzing synthesizer and spiky, mascara-smeared guitar. Among the best bets is "Killer Diller," a jangly, lo-fi garage-rock burner where Powers growls "rock 'n' roll is here to stay." Consider this album your proof.

Cheater Slicks and Hexers also perform.
