For much of Johnny Marr’s career, the guitarist has existed as the ultimate second fiddle.

In the mid ’80s he worked alongside singer Morrissey, helping shape and define the Smiths’ idiosyncratic sound over the course of four classic studio albums. More recently, he’s functioned as a wise uncle of sorts, lending his musical talents to established acts (Modest Mouse) and relative unknowns (the Cribs) alike. In 2013, the guitarist finally released his debut as a solo musician, quickly following that hesitant first draft with this year’s Playland, a more assured, satisfying listen.
