Writer-director Damián Szifrón’s Argentinean import “Wild Tales” — a Best Foreign Language Oscar nominee this year — is a rollicking anthology telling six unique stories with themes of rage and revenge. The film is tough to peg in a genre — it’s alternately a thriller, a heavy drama and a pitch-black comedy — and even tougher to forget.
These tales don’t overlap — actually a blessing with how tightly packed each is — but “Wild Tales” definitely felt like the closest thing to “Pulp Fiction” since “Pulp Fiction.” It’s a spectacular and daring example of some excellent and (above-all) concise storytelling.
I don’t want to give away anything in these stories, except to say that a tolerance for violence and black humor is a prerequisite. With most of these stories clocking in around 20 minutes, Szifrón sets up some comedic and intense morality tales, again and again. Not all the stories are equal, but they range from very good to outright brilliant.
Fans of “Black Mirror,” Quentin Tarantino and Pedro Almodóvar (who co-produced the film), don’t miss this one. One of the best roller-coaster rides I’ve been on in a while and the best film I’ve seen so far in 2015.
