New in theaters:

"The Look of Silence"

Joshua Oppenheimer's companion piece to his stunning documentary "The Act of Killing" again examines acts of genocide in Indonesia. "Silence" is the more straightforward of the two, but no less haunting. Opening at the Gateway Film Center. (3 1/2 stars)

"Ricki and the Flash"

Meryl Streep plays a rocker who is reconnecting with her family in this dramedy from director Jonathan Demme and writer Diablo Cody. Added bonus: Rick Springfield!

Also playing:

"The Gift"

Actor Joel Edgerton wrote, directed and stars in this creepy and slick popcorn thriller with some layers of morality. One of the summer's most unexpected pleasant/unpleasant surprises. (3 1/2 stars)

"Fantastic Four"

Another superhero franchise that never got off the ground got another reboot, and critics and audiences haven't been kind. I kind of want to see why it's got a lower Rotten Tomatoes score than "Batman & Robin" or "Howard the Duck."
