Despite the new label pedigree, Beach Music, mixed and mastered by Jake Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, maintains a delirious, handmade feel, with Giannascoli scratching out lo-fi songs like kid utilizing a twig to draw up plays in the dirt during a backyard football game. Not even the thick sonic fog can obscure the musician's sharp pen, however, and songs like "Salt" and "In Love," a noir-ish piano ballad that sounds as though it were recorded as Giannascoli meandered along on a moonlit pier, can cut clean through to the bone. "I will follow you down," the musician pledges on the latter, his crumbling voice suggesting a deep comfort with the concept of bottoming out.
