Winter hats

Once it gets below 40, I'm ready to break out my hat collection. My goal is to crochet enough beanies to wear a different one every day of the week this winter. So far, I'm way behind in the hat production. - Alyse Kordenbrock

The Official Movie Critics' Watch

A simple Timex Indiglo favored by the likes of Roger Ebert and Kenneth Turan, it does exactly what a critic needs: a quick time check in a dark theater. - Brad Keefe

"Beauty Is a Wound" by Eka Kurniawan

This book was recommended by a friend, who described it as a work of magical reality on par with Gabriel Garcia Marquez (arguably my favorite author). It's a credit to Kurniawan that the novel lived up to this high praise. - Andy Downing

Calvin & Hobbes

Last week marked the 30-year anniversary of the publication of the first C&H strip. That was back when you still cut things out of the newspaper, and many of these delightful and perceptive works of art found their way into my personal archive - later supplemented by C&H anthologies. It's funny, you'd think they'd read differently later in life than they did then. - Jim Fischer

Sassafras Bakery frozen pie shells

I found my trusty pie crust recipe years ago and can produce flaky version when the mood strikes. But it will never be as beautiful, tasty or totally foolproof as AJ Perry's. Three shells came home pre-Thanksgiving this year, to be baked with bourbon-pecan, pumpkin and Dutch apple fillings. Holiday headache averted. - Kristen Schmidt
