Cleveland's Mr. Gnome operates as a duo, but the band's latest, The Heart of a Dark Star, from 2014, sounds like it could have been assembled by scores of fairies and woodland creatures. Songs like "Melted Rainbow" and "Star Stealers," are dense and catchy, built on layered vocals, galactic synthesizer swirls and howling, hypnotic guitars that, taken collectively, can be a challenge to replicate live. Not that band members Nicole Barille and Sam Meister aren't up to the task, incorporating effects and loops to flesh out the in-concert sound.
