When long-running campus bar and music venue Bernie's Bagels closed on December 31, many who patronized the establishment lauded its all-inclusive vibe, which allowed audiences from diverse scenes an opportunity to associate.
"You had [the punk and hardcore fans] mingling with the hip-hop crowd, and then you had the break dancers and the graffiti writers, and all those things were colliding in this space," said local rapper Blueprint, who was a regular presence at the venue's long-running Sunday night hip-hop event.
At its best, Alive's annual Bands to Watch showcase can offer attendees a similar experience, bringing artists and music fans from myriad scenes together under one roof for an evening. That's certainly the case this year, with a wide-reaching lineup that features everything from rock (Playing to Vapors, Mary Lynn) and hip-hop (Correy Parks) to electronica (The Fallen) and hardcore punk (Nuclear Moms).
We hope to see all of you at Skully's Music-Diner on Saturday, Jan. 30, for our annual Bands to Watch celebration. As always, admission is free. Read on to learn a bit more about this year's selections.
