Alive recommends:"Moonlight"
A tale told in three acts of a young African-American man's life, this is a moving and deeply human look at life and love. One of the year's best and so relevant now. (4 stars)
"Edge of Seventeen"
A warm and smart high-school comedy that nails the small dramas that seem unbearable at the height of teenage angst. Features a great lead turn from Hailee Steinfeld. (3 ½ stars)
"Arrival"
"Sicario" director Denis Villeneuve delivers a thinking woman's sci-fi movie that combines heady themes with a sense of wonder. Amy Adams stars. (3 ½ stars)
"Doctor Strange"
This metaphysical mind-bender finds there is actually plenty of freshness to be found in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Worth the 3-D upgrade, too. (3 ½ stars)
