New releases for Thanksgiving week including Walt Disney Animation's latest female protagonist stars in a Polynesian tale of a teenager on a mission to save her people.

New releases:

"Moana"

Walt Disney Animation's latest female protagonist stars in a Polynesian tale of a teenager (voiced by Auli'i Cravalho) on a mission to save her people. It also features songs from "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

"Allied"

A British intelligence agent (Brad Pitt) meets a French resistance fighter (Marion Cotillard) who may not be what she seems in this drama from director Robert Zemeckis.

Limited screenings:

Mad Max Wasteland Weekend

The Gateway Film Center is screening all four "Mad Max" movies in 35mm, plus a showcase of some Max-themed artwork. Bonus: They'll also be presenting the buzzed-about "Black and Chrome" version of "Fury Road."

Alive recommends:

"Moonlight"

A tale told in three acts of a young African-American man's life, this is a moving and deeply human look at life and love. One of the year's best and so relevant now. (4 stars)

"Edge of Seventeen"

A warm and smart high-school comedy that nails the small dramas that seem unbearable at the height of teenage angst. Features a great lead turn from Hailee Steinfeld. (3 ½ stars)

"Arrival"

"Sicario" director Denis Villeneuve delivers a thinking woman's sci-fi movie that combines heady themes with a sense of wonder. Amy Adams stars. (3 ½ stars)

"Doctor Strange"

This metaphysical mind-bender finds there is actually plenty of freshness to be found in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Worth the 3-D upgrade, too. (3 ½ stars)
