Esme Patterson prepares for a concert at the Basement.

In recent years, we have seen a good number of successful female singer-songwriters who blur the lines between pop and indie and rock conventions. Another standout of late is Esme Patterson. Over the course of three solo albums, Patterson jumps from the Chris Isaak-esque “What Do You Call a Woman?” to “Feel Right,” a warm slab of early MTV pop of the sort that makes the Katy Perrys of the world have to up their game. Since leaving Paper Bird, she has taken full advantage of her creative freedom as a solo artist, and if her latest album, We Were Wild, is any indication, Patterson is just beginning to hit her stride.
