North Carolina stoner-metal act ups its game

What grew to be called stoner metal took root around the turn of the century, and the term has ebbed and flowed since, as no one has come up with a better blanket term for metal that would have an easier time defining “irony” than using it. Frequently under the radar is ASG, a North Carolina quartet that deserves the higher profile that graduating to Relapse Records provides. The band's latest, Survive Sunrise, continues ASG's showcase of a band that knows what it wants, stealing and melting down everything from epic, Queensrÿche pomposity to dirty, early Alice in Chains harmonies and Hawkwind's heavy headspace, and refashioning it all into a new, beautiful beast. Lo-Pan and Beitthemeans open. (Safe bet)
