Another week, another new Columbus brewery
This is now the standard opener for nearly half the On Tap columns written in this paper, but … Columbus' newest brewery is now open.
Somewhere in Particular Brewing opened last week at 5055 Dierker Rd. following an extensive build-out. The brewery is located next to the historic Henderson House, which was built in 1900 on Columbus' Northwest Side. Somewhere in Particular is owned by Joe Casey, Nikki Gallo and Pat Sullivan, plus a couple of silent partners.
Casey has worked as a beer buyer for more than two decades; more than 15 of those years have been at Gallo's Taproom. Nikki Gallo comes from the Gallo family, which owns the Taproom and Gallo's Kitchen & Bar.
The brewery adapts its name from head brewer and co-owner Pat Sullivan's past work; he has operated as a nomadic brewer under the name Nowhere in Particular Brewing for several years. Sullivan will continue to brew under the Nowhere brand while also creating the house beers for Somewhere.
“I knew Pat Sullivan when he came to the market with Nowhere in Particular,” Casey said. “It came about organically. We came across the property three years ago. It's so unique and different, and lends to a great outlay for brewery. … The property itself pushed us into the brewery.”
The group recently completed a 2,500-square-foot expansion behind the house, where the brewery and taproom reside. It seats roughly 50 inside and 75 outside. Because the Henderson House is a historic property, they can't attach structures to it, Casey said, so they're finding unique ways to utilize it for day-to-day operations. Eventually the house, which seats about 65, will be used as a taproom and for private events.
Sullivan first fired up the brewery on Oct. 1, and has already created a steady roster of Somewhere in Particular beers, include a session IPA, single and double IPAs, a Belgian tripel, a Belgian table beer and a porter. The taproom also features selections of Sullivan's Nowhere in Particular-branded beers, plus guest taps from Columbus Brewing Company, Jackie O's and Madtree.
“In two to three weeks we'll have eight or nine house beers on draft and it will be continuously rotating,” Casey said. “Pat is very versatile; he's good at making solid standards and getting strange and experimenting.”
The brewery features a house-made menu of bar snacks, including appetizers, pizzas and sandwiches.
