A rundown of select films currently playing in theaters
New in Theaters:
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms”
A new adaptation of the holiday classic features a young girl, Clara (Mackenzie Foy), who, with the help of a Nutcracker (Jayden Fowora-Knight), must help reunite the Four Realms — a Narnia-like parallel world hidden behind a secret door.
The Queen biopic arrived amid much fanfare — and to middling reviews. On the plus side, star Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”) has received plaudits for his portrayal of singer Freddie Mercury, and the Live Aid scene is said to be thrilling.
In this 1995 film, actor Paul Newman plays an aging … wait, scratch that. Wrong “Nobody's Fool.” I've now been informed this is actually the latest from director Tyler Perry and stars Tiffany Haddish.
Jonah Hill's directorial debut could have been a coming-of-age story about how growing up is tough but kids are resilient. Or one about the dangers of going down the wrong path. It's not really either. The thing about it that most made me feel like a teenager again was the feeling I had at the end: Who cares? (2 stars)
Based on the title alone, I really wanted this action-adventure film set on a nuclear submarine to star Liam Neeson (it actually stars Gerard Butler). No matter. Reviews suggest it's still a welcome dose of dumb fun.
“The Hate U Give”
The film, based on The New York Times bestseller of the same name, has received generally stellar reviews, with Variety writing it's a “brilliantly modulated balancing act between dark and light, anger and optimism, white privilege mined for pointed laughs and black fury portrayed as a galvanizing force for change.”
“The Sisters Brothers”
John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix star as Charlie and Eli Sisters in this hyper-violent Western from director Jacques Audiard (“A Prophet”), which presents an inventive twist on the frontier road trip film.
Ryan Gosling stars as Neil Armstrong in this biopic that has me anticipating the Neil deGrasse Tyson tweet noting that the first known man can actually be traced to a fossilized jawbone uncovered in Ethiopia.
