Willie Phoenix, Ricki C, local rock radio and pizza keep the Watershed guitarist fueled
Colin Gawel is probably best known as the singer/guitarist of Columbus power-pop legend Watershed, and these days you can catch him onstage with the League Bowlers (or behind the counter at Colin's Coffee in Upper Arlington). On Sunday, Dec. 23, from 3 to 6 p.m., Woodlands Tavern will host Gawel's annual holiday blowout, “Day Drinking with Colin and the Bowlers.” And yes, you can count on hearing Gawel's yuletide original, “Still Love Christmas.” Here are a few things he loves.
The Stash on CD102.5
This weeknight music show is like Pandora reading my mind. Playing a crazy mix of classic alternative rock, station PD Mase Brazelle literally has me honking my horn with one pleasant surprise after the next. Every night from 6-8 p.m., this is essential local listening.
Shadowlords: The Willie Phoenix Fanpages
Willie Phoenix is a rock ‘n' roll legend who happens to live in Columbus. With a catalog comparable only to Prince in scope and mystery, this Facebook fan page is a living, breathing museum trying to solve the puzzle of all things Willie.
I've had the good fortune of spending countless hours riding in a van next to Ricki C. The man has forgotten more about rock ‘n' roll than I will ever know, and he can tell a story. Do yourself a favor and check out the stories he has posted online. Google “Ricki C. Pencilstorm” or “Growing Old With Rock n Roll” to begin your journey.
Tucked in between a Staples and Home Depot, this family-friendly pizza joint in Hilliard has a big dining room, solid selections on tap and an overall casual vibe. It's good for date night or taking a group of kids after a baseball game.
“Monty Python's Flying Circus”
“What are you laughing about?” asks my wife as I chuckle with my earbuds in on the other end of the sofa. I have seen most of these skits at one point or another, but it has been really fun to watch them season by season on Netflix. Fun stuff.
