Dance companies combine forces for concert

You want a chance to dip your toes into the dance scene in Columbus but you're not sure where to start? It's like the Judah Performing Arts Company was in your head.

The company's annual Di-ver-city Project performances bring together several local dance troupes, offering each a chance to display its unique aesthetic while sharing work that relates to a common theme. This year's theme is “Come Back…”

“The focus is just to bring people together,” Shelly Ridley-Steward of Judah Performing Arts said, “and to showcase the excellence we have in the city.”

Judah is one of five companies that will be featured on Saturday's concert. Lawrence Lemon's Nomel Inspirational Dance Theater is another, showcasing its faith-inspired dance stories.

“I love meaningful movement. I have a message, and of course there's room for metaphor, but I'm definitely a storyteller in my choreography,” Lemon said. Of the work for the Di-ver-city program, Lemon said, “You'll see elements of church in the movements and the gestures.”

GOREE Drum & Dance, ONYX Productions and Dance E.L.I.T.E. Performance Academy will also perform.
