The country singer will put a boot up the audience's collective ass on Monday, July 29

Toby Keith most notably flirted with controversy following the release of his jingoistic 2002 single “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American),” with its claim that “putting a boot in your ass” was “the American way.” Asked about the song at the time, Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines said, “It’s ignorant, and it makes country music sound ignorant.” (The two later quashed the budding feud, which culminated in the Chicks singer wearing a not-subtle FUTK T-shirt during the 2003 Academy of Country Music Awards.)

In the years since, Keith has largely avoided making headlines, leaving that territory for fellow Ohio State Fair performers Hank Williams Jr. and most recently Confederate Railroad, operating like a business that knows better than to alienate its fan base. It’s why he performed at the 2016 inauguration of President Donald Trump, later telling the audience at the 2017 Country Radio Seminar that he was asked to perform during the military portion of the inauguration, and, once more, he had also performed for former President Barack Obama.

"In the end, it just makes you stronger," Keith said of the backlash he received for performing the Trump shindig. "If you don’t succumb to that kind of pressure, you’ll always come out stronger. Your fans will love you more. Your friends will love you more. And, at the end of the day, you just get another notch on your gun belt."

With the country singer set to headline the Ohio State Fair on Monday, July 29, we thought we’d take a stab at predicting his entire set list. For those planning to attend, let us know how many songs we guessed right!
