Expect stellar outfits, amazing backup dancers, plenty of onstage banter and songs with that classic Lizzo bite
“It’s Just a Matter of Time Till Everybody Loves Lizzo” proclaimed The Cut in a headline. The article was published in February, two months before Lizzo dropped her third album, Cuz I Love You. It debuted at number six on the Billboard 200, solidifying The Cut’s prediction: Everyone does indeed love Lizzo.
It’s not difficult to see why. Cuz I Love You is an easy album to love, with its overarching theme of — to use a very Lizzo phrase — feeling yourself. “And she never tell me to exercise/We always get extra fries/And you know the sex is fire/And I gotta testify/I get flowers every Sunday/I'mma marry me one day” she spits on “Soulmate,” one of the album’s best tracks.
Besides being a master of ass-shaking, quickfire earworms, Lizzo is also a damn good vocalist. She has a powerful set of pipes and moves easily from girl power hip-hop anthems (“Like A Girl”) to soulful slow jams about her ex (“Jerome,” “Lingerie”). No matter the tempo, that distinct Lizzo bite is always present. “Go on, take your ass home/And come back when you're grown,” she sings on “Jerome.”
Expect to hear all of Cuz I Love You’s hits when Lizzo headlines WNCI's Summer In The City outdoors at Express Live on Sunday, Aug. 18. Also on hand: stellar outfits, amazing backup dancers and plenty of onstage banter. (Check out her recent Tiny Desk Concert for NPR Music below for a taste.)
And, of course, expect an appearance from Sasha Flute, Lizzo’s instrument of choice, which she has been playing for 20 years. Word is that she plays a mean rendition of Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott’s “Big Shot.”
