Here are a handful of places to which you can escape once ‘family time’ is out of the way

The prospect of spending extended time with the family over Christmas is daunting to many. If you're in search of an escape that day, or just want to celebrate with a cocktail or a pint in the comfort of a local watering hole, visit one of these bars open on Christmas Day. We're betting you won't be drinking alone.

Bob's Bar

4961 N. High St., Clintonville

The “Cultural Hub of the Midwest,” known for its extensive beer selection, will open at 6 p.m. on Christmas and keep the taps flowing until 1 or 2 a.m., depending on how busy the bar is. Christmas might be your time to explore some new craft beers, or get started on the Bob's Bar World Tour. Those 130 beers aren't going to drink themselves. bobsbar.com

Union Cafe

782 N. High St., Short North

This popular Short North haunt opens in the evening around 5 or 6 p.m. (management hadn't decided as of printing). The cafe is offering bar service only; the restaurant won't be serving food. Still, this remains a good opportunity to knock back a couple cocktails in good company. columbusnightlife.com

Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails

73 E. Gay St., Downtown

Tip Top often does special evening hours on holidays, and this Christmas it'll be open from 4-11 p.m. Hole up at the Downtown bar, order a beer and a shot of whiskey, and splurge on a plate of Ohio nachos before that New Year's resolution starts. tiptopcolumbus.com

The Ruckmoor Lounge

7496 High St., Worthington

The Ruckmoor Lounge is a dive bar institution dating back to 1958, and remains as an enigma, standing out amid sprawling highways and suburban development. The pub is there for your day-drinking needs the entirety of Christmas Day. (It opens at 5:30 a.m. and will remain open until 2:30 a.m. the next morning.) Grab a seat at the L-shaped bar if you can find one, or play some beer pong and ring toss.

St. James Tavern

1057 N. Fourth St., Italian Village

The much-loved St. James will open at 7 p.m. and keep pouring brews until 2 a.m. It's the ideal place to cozy up with inexpensive pints of craft beer, throw a couple favorites on the jukebox and play some billiards. When asked if the bar is doing any specials that day, this writer was told, “There might be cookies." stjamestavern.com
