The latest updates from the bar and restaurant scenes

One of the Short North’s most beloved small businesses has served its last baguette. Laughlin’s Bakery (15 E. Second Ave.) announced on social media Sunday that it has closed permanently, citing a slow holiday season and poor sales for the past three years. Owner Jonas Laughlin, an opera singer-turned-baker, opened the European-style bakery in December 2014.

A new plant-based eatery, Lifestyle Cafe, has filled The Angry Baker’s former space at 891 Oak St. in Olde Towne East. Lifestyle is currently in soft opening mode, with a grand opening planned for Monday, Jan. 18. The café’s regular hours will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bartender Logan Demmy, mostly recently the bar manager at The Citizens Trust, is moving on to a new gig at Vaso in Bridge Park. Demmy’s new boss, Orcun Turkay, says that Vaso’s goal is to become one of the top bars in the world. Demmy, who starts at Vaso this week, knows what it takes. He was head bartender at the Singapore speakeasy 28 HongKong Street when it was named No. 1 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list in 2016. 

Short & Stout Kitchen has shuttered inside The Daily Growler at 702 S. High St. The pop-up kitchen started serving brunch and burgers out of the Brewery District beer bar last summer and plans to reopen elsewhere. 

A Japanese ramen spot called Slurping Turtle is slated to open at Easton Town Center this year. The ramen restaurant, which has one other location in Ann Arbor, joins a flurry of new restaurant and bar options that have either opened or are coming soon to Easton’s north end, including Forbidden Root, RH Restaurant, True Food Kitchen and The Beeline. 

Pokeworks has closed at 1005 W. Fifth Ave. after a little more than a year. It was the only Ohio location for the fast-casual poke chain.
