Two people fatally shot in separate incidents Wednesday brought the 2020 homicide death toll in Columbus as of midday to 105 victims, tying the total for all of 2019.
The first shooting occurred about 1:55 a.m. Charles Knapper, 21, of the East Side, was found shot in an alley near the intersection of East Moler Street and City Gate Avenue in Merion VIllage on the city’s South Side.
Knapper was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:01 a.m.
Police have identified 23-year-old Robert Bowens Jr. of the South Side as a suspect in the slaying and have filed a warrant for his arrest.
Homicide detectives determined that Knapper and Bowens were involved in an exchange of gunfire.
Knapper’s death was the 104th homicide in the city in 2020.
About four hours later, homicide detectives were again called after a shooting in the 200 block of South Central Avenue in the Franklinton neighborhood on the West Side.
Police responding to a 911 call about 6:30 a.m. found a 68-year-old man who had been shot. He was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition and died at 7:25 a.m., becoming the 105th homicide victim of the city this year.
The man’s name was not immediately released pending the notification of his family.
No suspect has been named in the shooting.
Three other people were wounded in two other shootings.
Two men were wounded in a reported robbery attempt at an after-hours nightclub.
Police also were investigating a non-fatal shooting from Tuesday night.
Around 11:45 p.m., a man was dropped off at Grant with a gunshot wound. The man was in stable condition Wednesday. Additional details about where he was when he was shot were not immediately known.
