New bar: Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse

Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse has always been one of the coolest places to go see a movie, and now - thanks to a recent renovation - it's one of the coolest places to get a drink. The entire bar area has undergone an extensive update, but it still has the retro, independent movie-house feel that Studio 35 is known for.

The large, rectangular bar is perfect for downing a few before a movie, and the stellar beer selection is even more impressive. The 40 taps at Studio 35 offer only craft beers, minus the one for a root beer, and co-owner Eric Brembeck says he and his wife, Rita Volpi, are committed to bringing in new, exciting beers on a regular basis.

Breweries like Bell's and Founders are generally on tap, but the other slots are constantly rotating. Ballast Point's Sculpin IPA is just one good example of the worthy beers on tap. Most pints run $5, but there are a couple of more expensive varieties. There are more than a handful of places where you can get a drink and watch a movie nowadays, but it's nice that Studio 35 doesn't hit you with the usual up-charge you get at the theater.

The bar also has a full liquor license, and the cocktail list features movie-themed libations. I'm partial to "The Big Lebowski," so The Dude (a white Russian) is high on my list of favorites, but The Ron Burgundy - Scotch, Scotch, Scotch - takes the cake for sheer awesomeness.

Studio 35 continues to host its monthly beer tasting paired with a movie. Last Sunday's event featured local beer from Barley's Brewing Company and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Next month's tasting will include a showing of Ridley Scott's highly anticipated return to sci-fi, "Prometheus."

The bar opens at 6 p.m. on days when the first show starts at 7 p.m., but Brembeck says he plans to open earlier in the near future. The bar stays open through all of the late-night shows, as well as after the movie if patrons decide to stick around for a drink.
